Newport, Rhode Island

Newport Travel Guide:

If you’re looking for a quintessential New England coastal getaway, Newport, Rhode Island should be on your list. Think historic mansions, sailboats filling the harbor, waterfront restaurants, rocky coastline, charming streets, and some of the prettiest ocean views in New England.

Newport is one of those destinations that works for almost any kind of trip - a romantic weekend, girls’ getaway, summer escape, or even a fall weekend when the crowds start to thin out. It’s small enough to explore over a long weekend, but there’s plenty to fill your itinerary between the Cliff Walk, mansion tours, shopping along Thames Street, drinks by the harbor, and some seriously good restaurants.

Why Visit Newport?

One of my favorite things about Newport is how much variety you get in such a small area. You can spend the morning walking along the ocean, tour a Gilded Age mansion in the afternoon, wander through downtown shops, and end the day with dinner and drinks overlooking the harbor.

Of course, Newport is especially beautiful in the summer, when the harbor is busy and everything feels very lively, but I also love it as an early fall destination. You still get that coastal New England feel with cooler temperatures that are perfect for walking around and exploring. I have also heard it is beautifully decorated at Christmas time!

How Long Do You Need in Newport?

I think two to three days is the sweet spot for Newport. A weekend gives you enough time to see the highlights without feeling like you’re rushing from one thing to the next. If you’re visiting during the summer, I’d give yourself three days so you have time to actually enjoy the waterfront and slow down a little.

When to Visit

Summer: The quintessential Newport experience. Expect warm weather, busy patios, boats filling the harbor, and the biggest crowds.

Early fall: The weather is cooler, walking around is more comfortable, and you can get a little bit of that New England fall feeling while still being on the coast.

Spring: Quieter and a great option if you're more interested in sightseeing than beach weather.

Located by Lauren Tip:

Newport is very walkable once you're downtown, so I recommend staying as close to the harbor or Thames Street as your budget allows. Park the car and explore on foot whenever you can—you'll find plenty of little shops, side streets, coffee stops, and waterfront views you might otherwise miss.

Whether you're visiting for the mansions, the food, the coastline, or simply a weekend by the water, Newport is one of those places that feels like a true New England escape without needing a full week to experience it.
